Before the Hack24 Hackathon

Warning: This post is over a year old. The information may be out of date.

In just under 2 weeks I’ll be spending a weekend hacking at code. Meeting other developers and creative minds while the PHP East Midlands team will take on challenges set by sponsors - how will we do? What will we do?

Hack24 takes place in Nottingham. Teams of up to 4 people will compete in a coding competition to build innovative, interesting, quirky and useful ideas for a number of challenges set by sponsors.

What challenge(s) you take on is up to you. What you do with them is up to you. Who wins them is up to the sponsor setting the challenge, so you’d better make sure you solve the challenge or come up with something really creative to win the prize(s) on offer!

I’ve done a few hackathons with friends before. Though they were more just a get-together on a weekend to work on a side-project of ours. Bounce ideas off one another and write some cool code to see what we can do. This will be a nice change to compete towards a goal of a challenge set by someone else!

Me and a few others from @PHPem will be forming a team and deciding on what challenge(s) we want to tackle.

It’d be awesome to win a challenge, but for me, taking part, meeting others and working with a great team towards a tight deadline will be what it’s all about. I imagine there’ll be lots of coffee fuelling our work if we work through for the full 24 hours!

I’ve been spending time in the Hack24 Slack chat and the people there are an awesome bunch! The staff and organisers are friendly, helpful, and just as excited about the hackathon (maybe moreso) than I/we are!

I’ll be posting an after blog post of my thoughts on the event, maybe I’ll do a during post too where I can update it with cool pictures and things from the event!
